ItOnlyComesToasted is a legendary phrase in my family. When members of my family were in a Wisconsin restaurant, my grandpa asked if he could get his BLT on non-toasted bread, the waitress proclaimed, “It only comes toasted”. Hence the legend. Never settle!
The Premise: 14 chefs competing to create the best sandwich known to mankind, and guess what? We are the judge, …our first task, tasting all 14 sandwiches. Spread out over Downtown Portland’s Directors Park, hungry foodies mull about for, or in perfect Portlandian style, stand in line for, a taste of the best that Portland, and the rest of the allotted country’s best restaurateurs put forth for all of us to taste. Culinary heavyweights, such as Chris Cosentino (Cockscomb, San Francisco), Matt McCallister (FT33, Dallas) and Paul Kahan (Avec, Chicago) came to battle local faves Tommy Habetz and Nick Wood (Bunk Sandwiches, Portland), Tyler Malek (Salt & Straw, Portland) & Stephanie Pearl Kimmel (Marché, Eugene, OR) to determine who makes the best sandwich. The Peoples Choice, shockingly, was Salt and Straw’s PBJ… a decedent ice cream treat version of our childhood favorite. The Judges selected Bonnie Morales, Kachka (Portland, OR) sandwich of Smoked Sprats, Egg, Smetana Butter Fried Toasts for the Judge’s Choice.
